Dr. Adanna J. Johnson earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and holds a Master's Degree in Counseling with a Community Emphasis, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Prairie View A&M University. She has been a licensed psychologist in the state of Maryland since 2011. Her clinical interests center on adjustment issues with children and adolescents and family therapy; and she uses a holistic approach in which she teaches her clients to find balance between spirit, min, and body in order to address concerns in their everyday lives.
Dr. Johnson is a tenured Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at Loyola University, where she is also the Director for African and African American Studies. Her areas of research focus are recruitment and retention of People of Color and women in academia at the student and faculty levels, cultural issues in clinical supervision, and the healing nature of traditional African cultural arts in a therapeutic context. She is a child and adolescent clinical supervisor for doctoral students in the Behavioral Health Division at the Loyola Clinical Centers, a community clinic in Baltimore. In 2015, she was named Mentor of the Year by the Maryland Psychological Association of Graduate Students.
A strong presence in the community, Dr. Johnson hosts pro bono community support groups, and has been an invited guest on radio shows like the Marc Steiner Show and First Edition with Sean Yoes. She served as a first responder in the Houston Astrodome after Hurricane Katrina and was a expert witness at the International Tribunal for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Currently, Dr. Johnson is a member of the National Board of Directors for the Association of Black Psychologists. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and 2-year-old son, dancing, Pilates, and yoga.
